Edward Nelson Browning, 1928 - 2008

Edward Nelson Browning, my grandfather, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008. He was 79 years old.

Born May 18, 1928, in Guernsey County, he was a son of the late Norman and Margaret Richards Browning. Edward was a Navy veteran of the Second World War, serving on the submarine U.S.S. Bergall (SS-320). Following his service, he worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad as a fireman on steam locomotives. Edward earned his Bachelor's Degrees from The Ohio State University, and was later employed General Motors as a tool and die maker.

He is survived by his four children: Ann Browning Shaw, Eric (Christy) Browning, David (Crystal McVeigh) Browning and Jon (Pam) Browning; nine grandchildren: George (Megan) Shaw, Lisa Shaw, Andy (Kari) Browning, Becky Browning, Meredith (Andy) Diamond, Alex Browning, Joshua (Amber) Browning, David Browning and Spencer Browning; great-grandson: Skyler Browning; brothers: John (Norma) Browning and Carl (Gail) Browning; sister: Karen (Joe) Pace; and sister-in-law: Peggy (Norman) Browning.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Betty Lou Henney Browning, and by brothers Norman and Gene Browning.

Grandma Betty died on Thursday, January 31st, at 2:30 am, just one day before her 78th birthday. We miss her. We love you Grandma.

Gram's Christmas Tree: The Adventure

Gram’s Christmas tree--finding it in the woods, cutting it down, hauling it into town, getting it through the front door, hanging it from the ceiling, and decorating it from ladders--it’s an annual tradition on Thanksgiving. I thought I’d share a few photos. And that red reindeer doll up there: Gram told me that it’s around 60 years old now. She got it when Aunt Nan was two years old.

Meet Kodak

We found Kodak at Roger’s flea market outside of Logan. We got him from a farmer, right out of the back of this truck. And he came with all sorts of extras: mites for example, and at least a pound of worms, plus four extra toes! He has two extra toes on each of his hind paws--we got a lot for our money, I tell you. He’s super cute though, and super smart, and super willful too, does what he wants. (Find videos and photos on the page I added here: link.)

So far he seems to be as smart as Border Collies are supposed to be: at ten weeks he knows come, sit, and fetch. But sometimes he’s too distracted to obey. We’re still working on that.
